Welcome!

Hey, thanks for stopping by!

I’m Rinaldi, an Indonesian marine ecologist and underwater photographer. I grew up in Jakarta before I moved to Hong Kong for 9 years. I am now based in Nusa Penida, Bali, where I conduct long-term monitoring of fish, megafauna, and coral biodiversity.

Research

My research focuses on marine biodiversity, ecosystem function, and human impact on tropical coral reefs. With over 10 years of experience, I am intimately familiar with a plethora of research techniques, including traditional visual census, BRUVs, settlement tiles, molecular biology, photogrammetry and 3D models, as well as computer vision.

I am passionate about finding out:

  • How will ongoing anthropogenic impacts shift species assemblages?

  • How will ‘damaged’ ecosystems provide us functions and services?

  • How can we effectively protect remote reefs from further damage?

Photography

I am a self-taught underwater photographer with a deep fondness for all creatures big and small. Striving to capture uniquely beautiful moments in the water, I yearn to convey profound and rousing stories expressing the importance of conservation through a scientific lens.

As a child, I was first inspired by nature documentaries, alongside bodies of work by masters such as Cristina Mittermeier, Paul Nicklen, and Ami Vitale. Through my camera, I endeavor to unite my passions for both the arts and the sciences.
